Earthen ksar on a hill in the desert near Ouarzazate Sahara Desert Tours

Ouarzazate: Film Studios, Kasbahs and the Gateway to the Sahara

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Ouarzazate sits about 200 km south-east of Marrakech, on the far side of the High Atlas, and is called the door of the desert. Most travellers stop for a few hours on the way to Merzouga or Zagora: the film studios, the Kasbah Taourirt and lunch, with Ait Ben Haddou 30 km away. Stay a night only if you want a slower pace or a visit to the Skoura palm grove.

What to see

Atlas Studios

Ouarzazate's dry light and endless landscapes made it a favourite of film-makers, and its studios are among the largest in the world by area. Sets from Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Mummy and many biblical epics stand in the desert. A guided tour takes about an hour; some sets are reused, so what you see changes. Read more in our guide to film locations in Morocco.

Kasbah Taourirt

A vast earthen kasbah in the centre of town, once a seat of the powerful Glaoui family, who controlled the caravan routes of the south in the early 20th century. Part of it is restored, with painted ceilings and carved plaster in the family apartments; the rest is a maze of earth walls.

Ait Ben Haddou

The most famous fortified village in Morocco, a UNESCO site 30 minutes away. Most itineraries visit it on the same day; see our Ait Ben Haddou guide.

Skoura palm grove

Forty minutes east, Skoura is a green oasis of palms and old kasbahs such as Amridil, one of the most beautiful in the south. A walk through the gardens shows how irrigation channels sustain life on the desert edge.

Fint oasis and the Noor solar plant

The Fint oasis, a short drive south-west, is a palm-filled valley between bare hills. On the way out of town you may see the Noor Ouarzazate complex, one of the largest concentrated solar power plants in the world.
