Fes to Merzouga: Distance, Route and the Best Way to Reach the Sahara

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Merzouga is about 470 km south-east of Fes, 7 to 8 hours of driving over the Middle Atlas via Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt and the Ziz Valley. Leave Fes in the morning to reach the dunes for a sunset camel trek and a night in camp. The classic plan is three days, Fes to the Sahara and on to Marrakech, so you never drive the same road twice.

Ways to get there

  • Private tour. Pick-up at your riad in Fes, stops when you want, camp booked, and the onward route to Marrakech planned. The most comfortable choice.
  • Shared tour. Cheaper, fixed stops, larger camps; usually Fes to Marrakech in three days.
  • Night bus. Long-distance coaches link Fes with Rissani and Merzouga, often overnight in about 9 to 11 hours. Check current timetables before planning.
  • Self-drive. Good roads, but the last part to the camps needs a 4x4 or a camp pick-up. See driving in Morocco.
