Winding road crossing a desert landscape in southern Morocco Sahara Desert Tours

Marrakech to Merzouga: Distance, Route and the 5 Ways to Get There

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving over the High Atlas via Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. Nobody should do it in one go: the comfortable way is two days on the road with a night in the Dades Valley, which is exactly the shape of a 3 day Marrakech to Merzouga tour.

The main route

Times are without stops and vary with weather on the pass. The southern alternative runs via Agdz, the Draa Valley palm groves, Nkob and Alnif; it is quieter and similar in length. Learn more about the stops in our guides to Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge and Dades Valley.

The five ways to get there

1. Private tour with a driver

Your own vehicle and driver, departure from your riad, stops when you want them, and a night in the Dades or Todra before the camel ride. This is the most comfortable way and the one most of our guests choose. See the day-by-day plan of our 3 day Marrakech to Merzouga tour.

2. Shared group tour

The same route in a minibus with other travellers and fixed stops. Cheaper, less flexible, and the desert camp is often larger. Our comparison of private and group desert camps explains the trade-offs.

3. Long-distance bus

A few coach services connect Marrakech with Rissani or Merzouga, usually taking 12 hours or more, often overnight, with changes or long stops. It is the budget option, but you see little of the route and arrive tired. Check current CTM and Supratours timetables before planning around them.

4. Rental car

Possible on good roads, but the Tizi n'Tichka has many curves and slow trucks, and the last stretch to the dunes needs a 4x4 or a camp pick-up. Read our guide to driving in Morocco first.

5. Fly to Errachidia

Flights from Marrakech usually connect through Casablanca to Errachidia airport, about two hours by road from Merzouga. It saves time but skips Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges, which are half of the experience.

Which option is right for you?

  • 3 days total: private or group tour, round trip to Marrakech.
  • Continuing to Fes: do not go back. Cross the desert to Fes instead with our 3 day Marrakech to Fes desert tour or the 4 day version with two desert nights.
  • Only one or two days: Merzouga is too far. Consider Zagora or the Agafay Desert instead; see Merzouga vs Zagora.

All our options are listed on the Marrakech desert tours page and, from the Merzouga side, on Merzouga desert tours.

About 560 km by road, roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops, across the High Atlas via Ouarzazate and Tinghir.

Technically yes, but it means 10 hours in a vehicle and missing every sight on the way. Two days with a night in the Dades Valley is far better.

No. The railway does not cross the Atlas. You need a tour, a bus, a car or a flight to Errachidia.

What is the best way to get from Marrakech to Merzouga?

A 3 day private tour: you travel in comfort, stop at Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges, and spend a night in a desert camp.
