Moulay Idriss Zerhoun: Morocco's Holy Town Next to Volubilis
Published November 5, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours
The short answer: Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is a whitewashed hill town about 30 km north of Meknes, built around the tomb of Idris I, who founded Morocco's first Islamic dynasty in 789. Non-Muslims cannot enter the shrine, but can walk the lanes, see the only round minaret in Morocco and enjoy the view from the terraces. It sits 5 km from the Roman ruins of Volubilis, so most visitors see both in half a day from Fes or Meknes.
Why it matters
Idris I, a descendant of the Prophet, arrived from Arabia in the 8th century, was welcomed by local Amazigh tribes at nearby Volubilis and founded the Idrisid dynasty. His son Idris II went on to build Fes. The town that grew around his tomb became one of the holiest places in Morocco; a pilgrimage here was once said to be a substitute for those who could not travel to Mecca. Non-Muslims were not allowed to stay overnight until 2005.
What to see
- The view from the terraces. Climb the lanes of the Khiber or Tasga quarter for the classic view over the green-roofed mausoleum and the white town spilling down two hills.
- The round minaret. Built in 1939 and covered in green tiles with Quranic inscriptions, it is unique in Morocco.
- The mausoleum area. Non-Muslims can approach the entrance but not go in; a wooden bar marks the limit.
- The main square, with cafés, nougat sellers and grilled meat stalls.
Volubilis next door
The Roman city of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies on the plain below. Its mosaics, the Arch of Caracalla, the basilica and the olive presses are the best Roman remains in Morocco. Our Volubilis guide covers the visit.
Half-day plan
| Time | Plan |

| 13:00 | Lunch of grilled meat on the main square or a terrace |
| 14:30 | Continue to Meknes or back to Fes |
Tips
- Dress modestly: this is a pilgrimage town.
- Avoid Friday midday and the annual moussem in late summer if you prefer calm; go during it if you want the atmosphere.
- Comfortable shoes: the lanes are steep.
The trio of Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes fits into our 2 day Fes itinerary, the drive from Fes to Chefchaouen, and the 8 day Morocco tour.
