Fes to Chefchaouen: Distance, Bus, Taxi or Private Driver

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Chefchaouen is about 200 km north of Fes, roughly 4 hours by road through the Rif foothills via Ouezzane. There is no train. Take a CTM bus, a shared grand taxi with a change in Ouezzane, or a private driver who can also stop at Volubilis and Moulay Idriss on a longer route. A day trip is possible but tiring; one night lets you see the blue lanes in the quiet morning.

The scenic route via Volubilis

Instead of the direct road, go west from Fes to the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss, then north through olive and wheat country to Chefchaouen. It adds two to three hours but turns a transfer into a day of sightseeing. Read our guide to Volubilis and a day in Meknes.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip means about 8 hours on the road for 3 or 4 hours in town, arriving when the lanes are busiest. If you can, stay one night: walk to the Spanish Mosque for sunset, and photograph the blue stairways at 8am when the town is yours. Our Chefchaouen guide and photo spots help you plan.

Arriving in Chefchaouen

  • Buses stop at the station below town, a steep 15-minute walk or short taxi ride to the medina.
  • Cars cannot enter the medina lanes; drivers stop at the nearest gate or square.
  • Many riads are up stairs; pack light or ask the riad for help with luggage.

Going the other way, or further

From Chefchaouen you can continue to Tangier and Tetouan (see northern Morocco) or return to Fes and cross the Middle Atlas to the Sahara. Our 11 day Morocco tour drives Rabat to Chefchaouen, then Chefchaouen to Fes via Volubilis and Meknes, with all transfers by private vehicle.
