Tangier Travel Guide: What to See in Morocco's Gateway to Europe

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Tangier is Morocco's northern gateway, an hour by ferry from Tarifa in Spain and about two hours by high-speed train from Casablanca. Spend one or two days: the kasbah and its museum, the Grand Socco and medina, the American Legation, mint tea at Café Hafa above the strait, and Cap Spartel with the Caves of Hercules at sunset. Then head to Asilah or Chefchaouen.

Why Tangier is different

For centuries Tangier was coveted by Phoenicians, Romans, Portuguese, Spanish and British. From 1923 to 1956 it was an international zone run by several countries, a magnet for artists, writers, spies and adventurers. Delacroix and Matisse painted its light; Paul Bowles and the Beat writers lived here. Today it is a fast-growing city with a modern marina, a busy port and an old town full of character.

Things to do in Tangier

  • The kasbah. The fortified top of the medina, with the Kasbah Museum in the former sultan's palace (Dar el Makhzen) and views over the strait to Spain.
  • Grand Socco and Petit Socco. The big square at the edge of the medina and the small café-lined square inside it, once the city's social heart.
  • The American Legation. A museum in the first property the United States owned abroad, given by the sultan in 1821, with paintings and a Paul Bowles room.
  • Café Hafa. Terraces stepping down the cliff since 1921: mint tea, simple snacks and the view across the Strait of Gibraltar.
  • Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and a sea cave shaped like a map of Africa; see our Cap Spartel guide.
  • The corniche. An evening walk along the bay with the city's families.
