Hot Air Balloon Ride in Marrakech: What to Expect at Sunrise
Published November 5, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours
The short answer: balloon flights near Marrakech take off at sunrise from the countryside outside the city. You are picked up at your hotel or riad very early (often between 5 and 6:30am depending on the season), watch the inflation over mint tea, fly for about 45 minutes to an hour over villages, palm groves and hills with the Atlas on the horizon, then land for a Berber breakfast. The whole morning takes about four to five hours, and you are back in Marrakech before lunch.
How the morning works
- Pick-up before dawn from your riad or the nearest medina gate.
- Drive to the launch site, about 30 to 45 minutes outside the city.
- Tea and briefing while the crew inflates the balloon in the dark.
- Take-off at first light. The pilot climbs and descends to follow the wind; the sunrise over the Atlas is the highlight.
- Landing in an open field, with the crew following by road.
- Breakfast in a Berber house or tent: bread, msemen, honey, olive oil, eggs and tea. Some packages add a short camel ride.
What you see
- The High Atlas, snow-capped in winter and spring
- Earthen villages, farms and olive groves of the Haouz plain
- The Jbilet hills and the stony desert around the city
- On clear days, Marrakech in the distance
Safety and cancellations
- Choose an operator with licensed pilots, insurance and good recent reviews.
- Flights depend on the wind. If it is unsafe, the pilot cancels, usually with a new date or a refund; plan the flight early in your stay so you can reschedule.
- Wear closed shoes and layers: it is cold before sunrise and warm by breakfast.
- Flights are generally not suitable for pregnant travellers, very young children or people who cannot stand for an hour; check age and health rules when booking.
