Cooking Class in Marrakech: What You Learn and How to Choose One

Published November 5, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: a Marrakech cooking class usually lasts three to five hours: a guided walk through the market to buy spices and vegetables, mint tea, then hands-on cooking of a tagine, cooked salads and sometimes bread or pastries with a local cook, ending with a shared meal. Classes take place in medina riads, dedicated cooking schools or farms outside the city. Book one or two days ahead and mention any dietary needs.

What a class looks like

  1. Welcome with mint tea and an introduction to the spices of Moroccan cooking.
  2. Market visit to choose vegetables, herbs, meat and spices, and learn how locals shop.
  3. Cooking at your own station: chopping, spice blends, slow-cooking in a clay tagine.
  4. Bread or dessert, depending on the class: khobz, msemen or almond pastries.
  5. Lunch or dinner: you eat the dishes you prepared, often on a roof terrace.
  6. Recipes to take home.

Riad, cooking school or farm?

  • Riad classes: intimate, small groups, in the heart of the medina.
  • Cooking schools: well equipped, each guest at a station, often with a translator.
  • Farm classes outside Marrakech: pick vegetables in the garden, cook over wood fire, combine with countryside views.

How to choose

  • Check group size; six to ten people is ideal for hands-on cooking.
  • Look for a market visit and a real cook, not only a demonstration.
  • Ask about vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy options in advance.
  • Children are welcome in most classes, often from about age six with an adult.
  • Morning classes end with lunch; evening classes with dinner. Morning markets are livelier.
