Akchour Waterfalls and God's Bridge: Day Hike from Chefchaouen

Published November 5, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Akchour is a river gorge in Talassemtane National Park, about 45 minutes to an hour by road from Chefchaouen. From the trailhead, two walks branch off: one to God's Bridge, a natural rock arch over the river (about 1 to 1.5 hours one way), and one along the river past turquoise pools to the waterfalls (the small fall in about an hour, the big fall in about 2 to 3 hours one way). Go between April and October, bring shoes that can get wet, and avoid the gorge after heavy rain.

Getting there

  • Shared or private grand taxi from Chefchaouen to the Akchour car park; agree a return time with a private driver.
  • With a driver on a northern Morocco tour, which lets you leave early before the crowds.
  • The road ends at a small dam and parking area with cafés.

Many walkers do God's Bridge in the morning and the small waterfall after lunch.

Tips

  • Wear shoes with grip that can get wet; several river crossings are on stones.
  • Start early in summer: weekends bring many Moroccan families.
  • Bring water, sun protection and cash for cafés and the parking.
  • Swim only in calm pools and away from the falls.
  • Do not go after heavy rain or storms: the river rises quickly in the gorge.
  • Pack out your rubbish; the park is fragile.

When to go

April to June is green with good water flow; July to September is perfect for swimming but busy; October is calm and golden. In winter, paths can be slippery and crossings dangerous.

Combine with Chefchaouen

Akchour turns a quick stop in the blue town into a two-night stay: one day in Chefchaouen's lanes, one in the mountains. Read our Chefchaouen guide, the photo spots and how to arrive from Fes or Tangier. Our 11 day Morocco tour can add a night and a guided hike to Akchour.
