Agafay Desert: What It Is, What to Do and How It Compares to the Sahara
Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours
The short answer: Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills about 40 km south-west of Marrakech, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road. It has no sand dunes, but it offers wide open landscapes, views of the snowy High Atlas in winter, camel rides, quad biking and comfortable camps. Choose it if you have one evening; choose Merzouga if you want the golden Sahara dunes and can spare three days.
What the Agafay Desert looks like
Agafay is a hamada: a plateau of rolling, rocky hills in shades of beige and pink, almost without vegetation. On clear days the High Atlas rises behind it, white with snow from roughly December to March. The Lalla Takerkoust reservoir sits on its southern edge. It feels remote, yet you can be back in your Marrakech riad by midnight.
Things to do in Agafay
- Camel ride at sunset. Usually 30 to 60 minutes across the hills, timed for golden light.
- Quad biking or buggy. One- or two-hour circuits on dirt tracks. Wear closed shoes, sunglasses and a scarf for dust.
- Horse riding. Gentler than a quad and quieter for photos.
- Dinner under the stars. Most camps serve a Moroccan dinner with music around a fire, then drive you back to Marrakech.
- A night in a camp. From simple Berber tents to glamping lodges with pools and private bathrooms.
- Lalla Takerkoust lake. Kayaking or a lakeside lunch with the mountains behind.
Agafay or the Sahara?
| Agafay | Sahara at Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | About 40 km, 45 to 60 minutes | About 560 km, two days of driving with stops |

| Time needed | Half a day or one night | 3 days minimum from Marrakech |
| On the way | Villages and the lake | Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades and Todra gorges |
| Best for | Short stays, families, a special dinner | The classic Sahara experience, camel trek into the dunes |
We are honest with guests: Agafay is lovely, but it is not the Sahara. If dunes are the dream, our 3 day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is the shortest way to see them, and our Marrakech desert tours page compares every option. Read Merzouga vs Zagora if you are weighing a two-day trip.
Best time to go
October to May is ideal. Days are warm and nights cool, so bring a warm layer for the evening; in winter it can drop close to freezing after sunset. From June to September, go only for sunset and dinner, as midday heat is intense. Sunset is the moment everyone comes for, so book the afternoon slot.
Practical tips
- Transport is the main cost. A private transfer lets you leave when you want; shared camp shuttles return at a fixed time.
- Check what the price includes: transfer, activity, dinner, drinks and music are often sold separately.
- Bring cash for tips and drinks; card machines are rare in camps.
- Families: the short distance makes Agafay easy with children. See our Morocco family tours.
Agafay also combines well with a morning in the Atlas Mountains; our day trips from Marrakech can end with sunset in the desert.
