Climbing Mount Toubkal: Route, Difficulty, Best Season and What to Pack

Published November 5, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa, is usually climbed in two days from the village of Imlil: about five to six hours up to the refuge at around 3,200 m on day one, then the summit at sunrise and the long descent back to Imlil on day two. From roughly May to October it is a demanding but non-technical hike for fit walkers; in winter it becomes a snow climb needing crampons, an ice axe and experience. A licensed mountain guide is mandatory.

The classic two-day route

StageAltitudeTime
Imlil to AremdAbout 1,740 m to 1,900 mAbout 1 hour
Aremd to Sidi Chamharouch shrineAbout 2,350 mAbout 1.5 hours
Sidi Chamharouch to the Toubkal refugesAbout 3,200 mAbout 3 hours
Refuge to the summit (day 2, before dawn)4,167 mAbout 3 to 4 hours
Summit back to ImlilDown to 1,740 mAbout 5 to 6 hours

A three-day version adds a night in a village or a second night at the refuge, which helps with altitude and makes day two less brutal.

How hard is it?

  • Fitness: you need to walk six to ten hours a day on rocky paths. Regular hikers manage well.
  • Terrain: mule paths, then long scree slopes above the refuge; tiring on the way down.
  • Altitude: headaches and breathlessness above 3,500 m are common. Walk slowly, drink a lot and tell your guide about symptoms.
  • Not technical in summer: no ropes or climbing skills needed in dry conditions.

In winter, snow turns Toubkal into a mountaineering ascent.

Best season

SeasonConditions
May to June, September to OctoberBest: mild days, cold nights, usually dry trail
July to AugustHot in the valleys, busy on the trail, cool at the summit

Rules and logistics

  • Guide: trekking in Toubkal National Park requires a licensed mountain guide.
  • Mules: carry bags to the refuge so you walk with a light daypack.
  • Refuges: dormitory beds, meals and blankets; book ahead in high season.
  • Start: Imlil is about 90 minutes from Marrakech; see our Imlil guide.

What to pack

  • Broken-in hiking boots and trekking poles
  • Warm layers, down jacket, hat and gloves (the summit is cold even in summer)
  • Head torch for the pre-dawn start
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm
  • 2 litres of water capacity and snacks
  • Sleeping bag liner for the refuge

Not ready for the summit? The Imlil day walk gives you the views without the climb. Want both mountains and desert? Our private tours can add a Toubkal ascent with a licensed guide before or after the Sahara.
