Atlas Mountains Day Trip from Marrakech: Imlil, Berber Villages and Toubkal Views
Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours
The short answer: the easiest Atlas Mountains day trip from Marrakech goes to Imlil, about 65 km and 90 minutes south of the city at roughly 1,740 m. You walk one to three hours through walnut orchards to a Berber village such as Aremd, have lunch with a local family, and look up at Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa. You are back in Marrakech for dinner.
How the day works
- Morning drive (about 1.5 hours). Leave Marrakech around 9am, cross the Haouz plain and climb through Tahanaout and Asni. On Saturdays Asni has a big weekly market where villages trade livestock, vegetables and tools.
- Imlil. The trailhead village and base for Toubkal National Park. Mules carry luggage and supplies to the higher villages.
- The walk. With a local mountain guide, follow mule paths past terraced fields, apple and walnut trees and irrigation channels to Aremd (Aroumd), the largest village of the valley. The pace is easy; you stop for photos and tea.
- Lunch. A tagine and salads in a village house or guesthouse terrace with views of the peaks.
- Return. Walk back down, then drive to Marrakech by late afternoon.
Who it suits
Anyone who can walk two hours on uneven paths. Families with children do the short loop; keen hikers can add a climb to a viewpoint pass. If you prefer less walking, the Ourika Valley is closer and flatter, and our day trips from Marrakech page compares both.
Can you climb Toubkal in a day?
Not sensibly. The normal route from Imlil takes two days: about five to six hours up to the refuge at around 3,200 m on day one, then the summit at dawn and the long descent on day two. Snow covers the upper slopes from roughly November to April, when crampons and an experienced guide are essential. The day trip gives you the view of the mountain, not the summit.
Best season
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to May | Green fields, blossom, snow on the peaks: the most beautiful time |
| June to September | Hot in Marrakech but pleasant in the mountains; start early |
| October to November | Clear light, walnut harvest, cool mornings |
| December to February | Cold, possible snow in Imlil; roads occasionally close after storms |
What to wear and bring
- Walking shoes with grip; paths are rocky and can be muddy.
- Layers: it is often 8 to 10 degrees cooler than in Marrakech.
- Sun hat, sunscreen and water.
- Modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) out of respect for village life.
- Cash for lunch, tips and small purchases; there are no card machines in the villages.
Respecting the villages
The Imlil valley was hit by the September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake, and many families are still rebuilding. Visiting supports them directly through guiding, mule hire, lunches and guesthouses. Ask before photographing people, and buy from village cooperatives rather than roadside sellers who follow cars.
Our private Marrakech tours include a licensed local mountain guide and lunch with a family. The Atlas also opens our multi-day trips: the road to the Sahara crosses it at the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
