Ourika Valley Day Trip from Marrakech: Setti Fatma Waterfalls and Berber Villages
Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours
The short answer: the Ourika Valley starts about 35 km south-east of Marrakech and ends at the village of Setti Fatma, roughly 65 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from the city. A typical day combines a Berber house visit, lunch at a riverside restaurant and a 30 to 60 minute scramble to the first of Setti Fatma's waterfalls. It is the easiest mountain escape from Marrakech, ideal in spring and on hot summer days.
The road into the valley
The road crosses olive groves and the Haouz plain, then follows the Ourika river as the valley narrows between red cliffs. Along the way you pass:
- Tnine Ourika, the market town, with a large weekly souk on Monday ("tnine" means Monday in Arabic).
- Gardens and cooperatives, including the Anima art garden and small argan oil and saffron cooperatives where you can watch the work.
- A traditional Berber house, where a family shows how they bake bread, make tea and live with the seasons.
- Riverside villages with suspended footbridges across the river.
Setti Fatma and the seven waterfalls
Setti Fatma, at about 1,500 m, is the end of the road. Seven cascades climb the side valley above the village; most visitors go only to the first. The path crosses the river and climbs over boulders, so expect to use your hands in places. Allow 30 to 60 minutes up and a bit less down. Local guides wait at the start, and having one is wise: the route is not marked and the rocks are slippery when wet. The higher falls take two to three hours return and are for confident walkers only.
Lunch by the river
The valley is famous for restaurants with tables and cushions set beside the river, sometimes on platforms in the water. Tagines cook on charcoal at the entrance. Agree the price before you sit down, as menus are not always shown.

When to go, and when not to
- Best: March to June and September to November, on a weekday.
- Summer: the valley is several degrees cooler than Marrakech, so local families flock here on weekends.
- Storms: the river can rise very fast after heavy rain upstream; flash floods have caused deadly accidents in the past. Do not go after storm warnings, and leave the riverbed if the water turns brown.
- Winter: beautiful snow on the peaks, but the waterfall path can be icy.
What to bring
Shoes with good grip (not sandals), a light layer, water, sun protection and small cash for the guide, lunch and parking. A private driver lets you stop where you want and leave before the afternoon traffic; our Marrakech tours include the Ourika Valley with a local guide.
