Erg Chigaga: Morocco's Wildest Dunes and How They Compare to Merzouga

Published November 5, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Erg Chigaga is a large field of high dunes in the far south of Morocco, about 50 to 60 km of desert track beyond the oasis town of M'Hamid El Ghizlane. There is no paved road: you arrive by 4x4 (or on a multi-day camel trek) and sleep in one of a handful of remote camps. It is wilder and quieter than Merzouga, but takes longer to reach and costs more. Plan at least four days from Marrakech.

Where it is

Chigaga lies at the end of the Draa Valley, beyond Zagora and M'Hamid, close to the Algerian border. The dune field stretches for roughly 35 to 40 km and holds some of the tallest dunes in Morocco. Between M'Hamid and Foum Zguid lies the dry lakebed of Iriki, part of a national park, a flat white mirror of mirages.

How to get there

  1. Marrakech to Ouarzazate over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with Ait Ben Haddou on the way.
  2. Ouarzazate to M'Hamid through Agdz, the Draa Valley palm groves and Zagora.
  3. M'Hamid to the dunes by 4x4, about two hours on sand and gravel tracks, past nomad wells and small oases.

The drive from Marrakech to M'Hamid alone is roughly 8 to 9 hours, so most itineraries spend a night in Ouarzazate or the Draa Valley on the way. Read our guides to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou.

Most first-time visitors choose Merzouga for its easier access and the option to continue to Fes; see Erg Chebbi and Merzouga vs Zagora. Chigaga suits travellers who want solitude and have the extra day.

Camps and practical tips

  • Camps range from simple bivouacs to comfortable tents with private bathrooms; all are remote, so bring what you need.
  • October to April is the best season; summer is extremely hot.
  • Carry cash; there are no shops or ATMs after M'Hamid.
  • Book with an operator who uses experienced desert drivers and well-maintained 4x4s.
