Morocco or Egypt: Which Should You Visit First?

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: choose Egypt if your dream is ancient monuments: the pyramids, Luxor's temples and a Nile cruise. Choose Morocco if you want variety in a short trip: living medinas, Sahara dunes, Atlas mountains, kasbahs and the Atlantic coast, with great food and riads. Morocco is closer to Europe and North America's east coast and needs no visa for most Western travellers.

We are a Moroccan agency, so we are not neutral, but we have sent plenty of guests to Egypt after Morocco and the other way round. Both are extraordinary. They are simply different trips.

Choose Egypt if...

  • You have always wanted to stand in front of the pyramids of Giza and walk into a pharaoh's tomb.
  • You love history and museums more than hiking or shopping.
  • A Nile cruise or diving in the Red Sea is on your list.

Choose Morocco if...

  • You want many different landscapes within a few hours' drive: city, mountains, desert, ocean.
  • Sleeping in a desert camp under the stars after a camel ride is the dream; see the Sahara in Morocco.
  • Food, design, crafts and staying in riads matter as much as monuments.
  • You want a short flight from Europe or the US east coast and a simple entry with no visa.

Morocco's earthen kasbahs, like Ait Ben Haddou, are still lived in and walked through.

Cost, safety and travel style

Day-to-day costs are similar for comparable comfort, and both countries have excellent value at the mid-range level. Both welcome millions of visitors safely each year, and both have persistent sellers around major sights; read is Morocco safe to visit for our honest take. In both, a good driver-guide transforms the trip. In Morocco, driving distances are long but scenic, which is why most visitors travel with a private driver rather than by public transport.

What a first trip looks like

A classic first week in Morocco: Casablanca or Marrakech, the imperial cities, two days crossing the Atlas, a night in the Sahara, and back. Our 8 day Morocco tour does exactly that, and the Morocco itinerary page compares itineraries by trip length.
