Marrakech Airport to the Medina: Taxi, Bus or Private Transfer

Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours

The short answer: Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is about 6 km from Jemaa el-Fnaa, a 15 to 20 minute drive. You can take an official petit taxi from the rank outside arrivals, the airport bus line 19 to the medina and the hotel districts, or a pre-booked private transfer. If you stay in a riad, the car stops at the nearest medina gate and someone from the riad walks you in, so a pre-arranged pickup is the least stressful option, especially at night.

Arriving at a riad: what actually happens

Most medina lanes are too narrow for cars. Your driver stops at a gate or square such as Bab Ksour, Riad Zitoun or Place des Ferblantiers, and a riad porter meets you with a hand cart for the luggage. The walk is usually 2 to 10 minutes. Without that meeting, it is very easy to get lost, and self-appointed "helpers" will offer to guide you for a fee. Message your riad your arrival time and ask exactly where they will meet you.

In the arrivals hall

  • Cash. ATMs and exchange counters are in arrivals. The dirham is a closed currency, so you usually get it on arrival; see our money guide.
  • SIM card. Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi have desks or kiosks; a data card makes maps and WhatsApp easy.
  • Passport control can take from 15 minutes to over an hour at peak times. Fill in any arrival form if asked and keep your riad address handy.

Arriving at night

Many flights from Europe land late in the evening. At that hour, a pre-booked transfer is worth it: the driver waits with your name, the fare is fixed, and the riad knows you are coming. Medina lanes are calm but dark, and a porter who knows the way makes the first impression of Marrakech a good one.

Flying into Casablanca instead?

Many long-haul flights land at Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN). Marrakech is about 2.5 to 3 hours by road, or you can take the train from the airport via Casablanca. Even better, start your trip in Casablanca and end in Marrakech; see Morocco tours from Casablanca.

Start your tour from the airport

All our multi-day tours include airport pickup. If you arrive in Marrakech and leave the next morning for the desert, the same driver can collect you at the airport and take you to your riad. See our 3 day Sahara tour or the Marrakech tours page, and read riad or hotel in Marrakech to choose where to stay.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Marrakech airport from the medina?

About 6 km, which takes 15 to 20 minutes by car depending on traffic.

Is there a bus from Marrakech airport to the city?

Yes. Airport bus line 19 links the airport with Jemaa el-Fnaa and the main hotel districts during the day and evening.

Can a taxi drop me at my riad door?

Usually not. Cars stop at the nearest medina gate or square, and riad staff walk you to the door with your luggage.

Should I book an airport transfer in Marrakech?

It is the easiest choice for night arrivals, families and riad guests, because the driver and the riad coordinate your arrival.
