Hassan II Mosque Casablanca: Guided Tours, Dress Code and What to See
Published November 4, 2026 by Morocco Amazing Tours
The short answer: the Hassan II Mosque, finished in 1993 on the Atlantic shore of Casablanca, is one of the very few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can enter, on guided tours of about 45 minutes held several times a day outside prayer times. Dress modestly, carry your shoes in the bag provided, and allow two hours with the esplanade and the museum.
Why it is special
Commissioned by King Hassan II and designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, the mosque was built partly over the ocean on reclaimed land, inspired by the Quranic verse that God's throne was on the water. Its minaret rises about 210 m, for decades the tallest in the world and still among the tallest. Up to 25,000 worshippers fit in the prayer hall and tens of thousands more on the esplanade.
Thousands of Moroccan craftsmen worked on it, and it is the best place in the country to see every traditional art in one building: carved cedar from the Middle Atlas, marble and granite, hand-cut zellige, painted ceilings, carved plaster and bronze doors.
What the guided tour shows
- The prayer hall. Vast and luminous, with chandeliers of Murano glass, heated floors and a roof that slides open to the sky.
- The mezzanines reserved for women, behind carved wooden screens.
- The ablutions hall downstairs, with lotus-shaped marble fountains.
- The hammam, built in the traditional style but not in use.

Half a day in Casablanca
Most travellers land in Casablanca and leave quickly, but the city rewards a few hours:
- Walk the Corniche west from the mosque toward Ain Diab for ocean views and seafood.
- Explore the Habous quarter, a 1930s "new medina" with olive and pastry shops.
- Look up at the Art Deco buildings downtown around Boulevard Mohammed V and the Central Market.
- Have a coffee at Rick's Café, a recreation of the bar from the film Casablanca.
